Guest Post from good friend and Bargainista Mystery Shopping Teacher
Have you ever wondered what mystery shopping is? If you’ve heard of it before you might be wondering if it is real or not. Well, I can tell you that it is real, and it is great. I should know, I am the mystery shopping teacher.
I have been mystery shopping for about 3 years now and I can tell you that it is a job that just about anyone can do. Yes, you read that correctly. It is a job that you actually get paid for and almost anyone can do it. Some people do quite well mystery shopping. Some make $40,000 a year or more!
Mystery shoppers visit businesses to perform evaluations of the services that they receive. Mystery shoppers, also called secret shoppers, usually do their shopping in secret. A company may know that they are going to be mystery shopped, but they don’t know who the shopper is. The mystery shopper is usually given a range of times that they can perform a mystery shop, and they do the shop during that time frame at their convenience. Shoppers may be instructed to perform the shop on a certain day, or between certain hours of a chosen day. But, the shopper always knows ahead of time if there are any time constraints so they can choose to do the shop or not.
Mystery shoppers are most often asked to keep their identity a secret. The point of keeping your identity secret is so a company can get a true indication of what their services are like. If employees know who the mystery shopper is, they are likely to put on their best act for the shopper’s benefit. It’s human nature to be on your best behavior if you’re being evaluated so this does not give a true indication of the experience of the average customer. Companies want to know what the average experience of a customer is and mystery shoppers provide this.
Why are mystery shoppers important to companies? Well, companies like to find out their strengths and weaknesses so that they can improve upon their weaknesses and continue to grow and thrive. They make more money if they improve their services, so they use the information given by mystery shoppers to improve.
Customers also benefit from what mystery shoppers do. Mystery shoppers are customers too and we want the best service possible. When we perform mystery shops, we have the opportunity to provide our own personal experience to companies who want to hear what we have to say. We pay closer attention to details than the average customer, but our experience is an average one.
I have been a mystery shopper for a few years now and I’d like to help out people who are interested in learning about how they can become shoppers. I can’t promise that you can make $40,000 a year doing it but I know that you can do well. I am a full time teacher but I still mystery shop because I can make $20 an hour doing so, sometimes I even make more than that. Plus, you only work when you want to. Visit my blog to learn more about mystery shopping in my series, Make Money Mystery Shopping. I’ll tell you everything you need to get started.
